Graphene + lithium battery ≠ graphene battery

2024-06-17

People who keep talking about graphene batteries are actually wrong.

As a carbon nanomaterial, graphene's role in lithium batteries does not exceed the scope of currently commonly used carbon materials.

Graphene + lithium battery ≠ graphene battery

As we know, lithium batteries are composed of four major materials: positive electrode, negative electrode, diaphragm, and electrolyte. The main negative electrode material currently used is graphite. Graphene is a two-dimensional crystal with only one atomic thickness (0.35 nanometers) that is peeled off from graphite and composed of carbon atoms. It has better performance than graphite, and has extremely strong conductivity, ultra-high strength, high toughness, and high thermal conductivity. It is known as the "king of new materials." People hope that it will replace graphite as the negative electrode of the battery, or be used in other key materials of lithium batteries, in order to greatly increase the energy density and power density of lithium batteries.

At present, many people call batteries containing graphene materials "graphene batteries." "In fact, calling these batteries graphene batteries is not very scientific and rigorous, and this concept does not conform to the industry naming principles and is not an industry consensus." Yang Quanhong, a Yangtze River Scholar of the Ministry of Education, a winner of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, and a professor at the School of Chemical Engineering of Tianjin University, pointed out in an interview with Science and Technology Daily that graphene has shown great application potential in lithium batteries due to its unique physical and chemical properties. However, as a carbon nanomaterial, graphene does not exceed the scope of currently used carbon materials in lithium batteries. Although there are many reports in scientific papers and corporate products about graphene improving the performance of lithium batteries, its core energy storage mechanism has not changed due to the addition of graphene, so it is not appropriate to call lithium batteries with added graphene graphene batteries.
